Exhibition Overview

Jun Kaneko is internationally recognized for his large ceramic dangos but few people know that he was first a painter. During the past 40 years he has gained worldwide attention for his ceramic work while continuing to challenge himself in other media. His aesthetic explorations include painting, drawing and printmaking, opera set and costume design, as well as new works in glass and bronze. His artwork is collected by museums worldwide, including the Sheldon, and he has received more than 30 public art commissions.

Design Execution

All of the catalogs for the Galleries begin with a conversation about the theme of the show, the artists who will be shown and any materials that the Director has found for inspiration. The only criteria given for the design of this catalog was the use of an image of dirt on the cover. We decided to juxtapose a simple, clean silver foil stamp for contrast. From here, the use of the square boundary was used throughout as a design element to pull all of the various images together.
