Hair

Hair grows everywhere on the human body except the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, eyelids, and lips. This exhibition will explore many ways in which hair is artistically represented, including cultural, anthropological, historical, and physical.

Design Description
Real human hair on the cover was the only absolute given for this catalog about hair. In the world of print, hairlines—very fine printed lines—are common and can be used for the mechanical specifications for the printed piece. The hairlines were used to create textures and patterns. We chose to use CMYK colors—Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK, the basic colors in 4-clor printing—thoughout the catalog to continue with the printing elements theme.

Datascapes

The need to convey data, statistics, and territory in a creative manner is a challenge embraced by artists who have used data abstractions—including maps, charts, and diagrams—as the basis for their work.

Design Description
All of the catalogs that we have done for the Galleries begin with a conversation about the theme of the show, the artists who will be shown and any materials that the Director has found for inspiration. This may have been the first catalog that didn’t come with any parameters other than the color green. A geometric abstraction was created for the cover to suggest a graph or chart or other representation of data. A special fold stamp was used in the thin lines to give the cover sparkle. These abstract representations of data are used throughout the book in different forms.
